By Jack Phillips Summer walleye, this is the time for the most popular game fish in Canada. Tens of thousands of anglers consider this their favourite fish to catch for the sport and mostly for the fact that it is one of the greatest fish to eat. This tip comes from an experience while fishing walleye in Northern Ontario, on Manitoulin Island, in went out early in the morning hoping to pick up a few walleye early. I headed for a shoal that I fish frequently; it is about 20 to 25 feet of water, and drops off to about 70 feet deep. After about and hour or so, I had 2 small walleyes to show for my effort. Guessing that the cool front that moved through over night had affected the fish, I started to fish the drop off and along the length of the shoal, and still no fish. With the help of technology (fish finder, sonar) I found that there were groups of fish suspended at 20 to 25 feed in 75 feet of water. I finally surmised that the fish holding at this level would be very hard to get to, and when suspended like this they are usually not in a feeding mood. The next problem was that to reach these fish with my jigs and no bottom structure to follow was near impossible, although down rigging or trolling would preset my bait at a better level, if they were not actively feeding it was again a tuff sell for these walleyes. What is needed in a situation like this is a slow presentation of the lure or live bait. What I needed was a bait delivery system that would consistently put me at the right depth and slow enough to keep the bait in the strike zone for a long time, so as to tease them into action. I also wanted to be able to make long casts to allow long drifts through these suspended walleye schools. I decided to give a slip-bobber a try; it’s simple and deadly when used right. Most anglers don’t use this walleye technique enough it works. The slip bobber, slips up and down the line from your hook to a bobber stop you set for the desired depth. I needed to get the bait down 25 feet; with the slip bobber the stopper you use to set your depth is so small that it will pass through the rod guides and onto the reel without no problems at all. And if you find your depth is not quite right you simply move the stop up or down. Now with the slip bobber controlling my depth accurately, I was able to drift my bait (live bait, jigs, and plastics work well) right through these schools of walleye at nose level, also able fish very slow giving these finicky walleyes lots of time to make up their minds about having a snack. It was a large school of walleyes and the result was a couple of hours of super walleye fishing. If you think about it slip bobbers can be used with your favourite live bait for walleye fishing. Either a plain hook or jig tipped with a minnow, worm or leach can be fished in the same way for precise depth control. Plus slip bobbers are not restricted to walleye fishing. They are great for all sorts of fishing, when conditions call for depth control, long distance casting or a really slow presentation. I have used them for trout and salmon in rivers, and even on bass in small clear pools where a long cast and slow movement is needed. I have taken a lot of nice bass from under and alongside the numerous swimming rafts and docks around different lakes I have fished and used this method quite successfully. These tactics also work great around bridge pillars, piers and supports, and weed lines, and dams. By casting so easily and smoothly they are great for kids, they love to see the bobber twitch and disappear. Once you start walleye fishing and any other species, you will likely find all sorts of situations where they will be the answer to speed and depth control. Pick up a couple and try these tips, you will not regret it. Just go fishing! Jack Phillips has been fishing Canada coast to coast for over 50 years. By Andrew Bicknell There are two categories of mood disorders recognized by the psychiatric community: unipolar and bipolar disorder. Both are a type of depression with the difference being those who suffer bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, also experience extreme mood swings between depression and episodes of extreme mania or high energy. The unipolar, or depression, type of mood disorder can further be broken down into the different types of depression which include: 1. Major depression. 2. Dysthymia. 3. Seasonal affective disorder. 4. Postpartum depression. Mood disorders are characterized by continued feelings of sadness, despair, guilt, irritability, loss of appetite, constant fatigue and suicidal thoughts. Different people will have different combinations of these thoughts and feelings, making it important for sufferers to seek professional help to help sort through the various symptoms. While some of these feelings are normal in daily life, when they become an on going problem that last for weeks, months and even years it is considered a mood disorder that needs some sort of medical or psychiatric treatment. The exact cause of mood disorders is not known. It does appear that many combinations of outside events can trigger an episode. It is known that many people who suffer mood disorders also have a chemical imbalance of the brain that makes them more susceptible to these depressed feelings. Research has also shown that the different types of mood disorders can run in families are thought to be a genetic trait. Treatment of mood disorders varies depending on the disorder itself and any outside influences that may contribute to the disorder. These outside influences include illness, drug or alcohol abuse or a major life changing event. Normally these need to be dealt with along with the mood disorder for treatment to be successful. The mood disorder itself can be treated with anti-depressant medication, therapy or a combination of the two. The different types of mood disorder can be treated successfully if its sufferers seek help. Unfortunately nearly half of the people who suffer from mood disorders never seek the help they need. By Mary Wilkins Just in time for the holiday season! SUPPLIES: # assorted holiday fabrics - this means anything from cotton prints to silk or velvet, why not try something really exotic! # matching thread # pins # chalk or other marker STEP 1: For each coaster cut 4 5″ squares of holiday fabric. Layer two of the squares on top of one another with wrong sides together. You will be looking at the right side of the fabric. STEP 2: Fold remaining two squares in half wrong sides together and place on top of first two squares. The folded edges face the middle. These two folded edges should overlap slightly.Pin all layers together. Trace around base of your wine glass. Stitch 1/4″ away from markings thru all layers. Backstitch on folded edges for added strength. Trim away excess fabric and turn.Push out fabric gently and press lightly. Now comes the fun part. Embellishing each one. Use whatever you may have on hand. As you can see these are easy for anyone to make. Ideally, each one should be a different fabric so everyone knows which glass is theirs. You can embellish these with ribbon roses, embroidery or leave them plain. Almost any fabric can be used. They can be very elegant or more casual, depending on your lifestyle. By Curt Whitesides The next time you are watching your favorite CSI TV show or a particular movie and stumble into the fascinating world of DNA, you might be surprised to know that our DNA can do more than identify a suspect or victim at a crime scene. In fact, DNA is now being used to identify ancestors in the new and exciting field of DNA Genealogy. DNA Genealogy takes traditional genealogy and applies genetics to it. DNA Genealogy involves the use of genealogical DNA testing to determine the level of genetic relationship between two individuals (Genealogical 2005). DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid, is used in the process because of its unique nature and the fact that it is passed down from one generation to the next. In the passing, some parts of the DNA remain almost completely unchanged, while other parts change dramatically. This property allows for the identification of certain consistencies between generations and provides the ability to identify genetic relationships. There are two types of DNA tests available for testing DNA Genealogy: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y-chromosome DNA tests. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is found in the cytoplasm of the cell instead of in the nucleus as is Y-chromosome (Tracing 2003). mtDNA is passed by a mother to both her male and female children without any additions or mixing from the father. Therefore, your mtDNA is the same as your mothers mtDNA. mtDNA is different in nature compared to Y-DNA. It changes slowly making it more difficult to determine close relationships and easier to determine relatedness. If two people have the same mtDNA, there is a very good chance that they also share a common maternal ancestor. Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine if that common maternal ancestor was recent or instead lived hundreds of years ago. Y-chromosome tests have been used more and more recently to determine DNA Genealogy. The Y-DNA tests are only available for males, because the Y-chromosome is only passed down along the paternal line from father to son. There are tiny chemical markers on the Y-chromosome that create a unique pattern. This pattern of markers is what is called a haplotype. A haplotype is used to determine one male lineage from another. This type of testing is often used to determine if two individuals who have the same surname share a common ancestor. One of the early beginnings of DNA Genealogy was a study published by Bryan Sykes in 2000 (Sykes and Irven 2000) that used DNA Genealogy (Y-chromosome markers) along with surname studies to determine relatedness. The study compared 48 men with the same surname of Sykes from the regions of England and analyzed four Short Tandem Repeats (STRs) on their Y-chromosome: DYS19, DYS390, DYS391, and DYS393. The study found that of the 48 men tested, 21 had the same core haplotype and many others were only one mutational step away from the core haplotype. Skypes interpreted these results to reveal a common origin from an ancestor who lived some 700 years ago (Butler 2005). Since its early beginnings, DNA Genealogy has come a long way and has grown rapidly. DNA Genealogy continues to increase in popularity as the price of tests becomes much more affordable and the number of markers and clarity of the tests become greater. Additionally, DNA collection techniques make it a very simple and pain-free process. Sources Butler J. (2005) Forensic DNA Typing; Biology, Technology, and Genetics of STR Markers, 74, 231-232. By Azizah A R When I come across people with several medical conditions, I feel sorry that these people were not aware of what they could do to help themselves avoid such a situation in the first place. Sometimes there’s a complex combination of conditions that one condition, as long as it is unresolved or unresponsive to treatment, prevents another serious condition from being addressed. This is because the life of the patient can be endangered if an attempt is made to resolve the second condition while the first is still unresolved. It really puts the patient and the doctor in a fix. There is much that we can do to prevent or reverse negative conditions before they become too serious or cause too much harm all over the body. It is all a matter of responsibility. If we believe that our health is in our hands, we will do all that’s necessary to first gather information and then apply what is most appropriate, within our means and safely, for our conditions. The general public, however, assumes that they will remain healthy without putting any special effort. And if they get sick, they expect the medical doctor to offer some miraculous pill that will solve all their health problems. As we mature and learn of friends and relatives being struck with serious illnesses and dying earlier than they otherwise would, we know that this is not true all the time. So you are healthy right now and do not have any medical problems - do you really need to do anything?Yes, given that we live in a world that is rather polluted not just in the air that we breathe but also through the food and drink that we consume, in addition to the stresses that we endure, it is a matter of time that a medical condition would appear. It is in everybody’s best interest to learn as much as they can to preserve their current health. In my opinion Preventive Medicine is a better insurance than any that the Insurance company can offer. Even though it may not be possible to be 100% covered in terms of disease prevention - we still have a much higher chance of remaining healthy for a much longer period if we take responsibility for our health. We still have to leave this world one day, but at least while we can, we should live as healthily as possible so that we can carry out our responsibilities effectively and hopefully make a positive difference while we are here. There are loads of information at the libraries, bookstores and the Internet - many freely available if we’ll take the time to explore. Even if you are not as enthusiastic as yours truly in the subject of Natural Health maintenance, at least study those medical conditions that have been encountered by family members. Knowing what causes these conditions and knowing how to prevent it can avert its happening to you. That’s a lot of savings in terms of time, money, peace of mind, self-esteem and of course, health. For those who are beset with a medical condition, set your mind to find a solution. Of course, in the meanwhile you would have to resort to Conventional Medicine - at the very least the drugs help maintain the condition from getting worse and creating more serious consequences, while you search for a safe but effective alternative. There are so many researches going on, such that if the answer is not found yet, it’s bound to be known sometime in the future. Just keep researching. At the same time, study and apply all that you can learn about Preventive Medicine. In the process itself, you may find that your medical condition actually begins to reverse. And what you’d be doing is mostly a change in the types and quality of food you consume, including exercise in your daily routine, and taking time out to de-stress yourself. Actually simple stuff in exchange for a better quality of life! Azizah A R has a great thirst for knowledge, particularly in Alternative Therapies, and loves to share her findings and tips in this fascinating world of Natural Medicine. By Nick Arrizza, M.D. Music so strongly evokes emotional responses that it is being more frequently employed in the context of psychotherapy as a powerful healing modality. As a novice in this field I inquired at a recent conference on music therapy as to how this tool effects healing in clients with emotional disorders. Conceptually, it is my understanding that the music therapist often employs musical improvisation to communicate with the unconscious aspects of the patients psyche. The therapist may set out to convey an empathic or supportive intention with the use of a musical language that communicates at an emotional rather than verbal level. The intention of the therapist may be completely informed by what she/he thinks the patient needs for his/her healing i.e. a unidirectional healing intention. Alternately, it may be more dynamically informed. In the latter case, the therapists intention is informed dynamically through her/his empathic attunement to the patients emotional state as the musical dialogue unfolds. In such a case the emotional quality of the music may evolve as the therapist and patient interact through the musical medium. Ideally in a genuine healing situation it is expected that the therapist will evoke in the patient an emotional state that brings with it greater internal harmony associated with such feelings as relaxation, peace, joyfulness, contentment, and a sense of light heartedness. This feeling of harmony, from an energy psychology paradigm, is associated with an ordered and sustaining bio-field of energy that supports both structure and function of the body at all levels. Metaphorically, the therapist could be seen to be helping the patient tune him/her self to an optimal bio-energetic field of frequencies that then spontaneously effect healing. To say that the therapist is directly doing the healing would be difficult to justify as the therapist couldnt possibly know how to direct the multitude of biochemical reactions necessary for healing to occur. She/he however may be facilitating the re-establishment of a healing bio-energetic field within and around the patient that itself orchestrates the biochemical re-organization. If we extend the use of this metaphor, the therapist could be considered as a tuning device, similar to that required to tune a musical instrument. Hence we can speak of the therapist as the tuner for the patients bio-energy field. It becomes obvious then that if a tuning device is itself out of tune the musical instrument to be tuned will be out of key, no matter how well the musicians technique. In the same way, if the music therapist who is helping to facilitate a realignment of the patients bio-energy field is out of tune this will not only limit the healing process but could also potentially be harmful for the patient. It becomes imperative then that the music therapist, apart from being a skilled musician, also undergoes an internal bio-energetic realignment or retuning. What will the therapist use as a tuning device however? In order to answer this question we must reflect on what it means to be in tune. As we alluded to earlier, when the patient is in harmony he/she feels relaxed, peaceful, joyful, contented, and lighthearted. We also notice that in such a state, stress is reduced and physical and emotional resilience is enhanced. This is clearly a state in which healing is optimally supported and might therefore be accepted as a state of optimal tuning of the bio-energetic field. Unfortunately, music alone cannot effect such an optimal state of tuning. If it could we wouldnt need the presence of the music therapist in the therapeutic situation. Hence, in the same way the music therapist cannot rely on music alone for the realignment of their own bio-energetic field. We are therefore left with a slight conundrum. In order to address this it becomes necessary to ask: where does the internal source of harmony that is represented by the feeling state mentioned above, originate within an individual. We note that his feeling state of harmony can be rapidly evoked when one actively appreciates something they like about themselves. Through the action of self appreciation one can spontaneously begin to feel joyful, relaxed, peaceful, contented and lighthearted, among other feelings. These feelings are also felt most intensely over the region of the persons heart. Since it is the person themselves that is actively doing the appreciating the feelings of appreciation are clearly emerging from that persons Self. As the feelings of appreciation are most intensely felt over the heart region, then it follows that that persons experience of themselves originates in the heart region. Ironically, most individuals however tend to think of themselves as originating in the mind or brain. In other words they think they are somewhere where they are not. Their heart, i.e. their Self, is left forgotten and abandoned. The mind and the beliefs that flow through it become the organizing bio-energy field that then tries to sustain the body in its daily functioning. However, because the mind is not the Self it does not have the necessary information to adequately sustain the physical/emotional body. This is obvious because none of us is capable of consciously knowing how to orchestrate the multitude of biochemical processes in our bodies. In most cases we are not even aware of what they are. As a result the individual does not feel in a state of harmony i.e. they feel stressed. It is only when the heart is re-instated as the center of that individual that harmony is re-established. The re-instatement of the heart as the center of a person however is not easily accomplished. The reason for this is that there are many beliefs in the mind/brain that lead the individual to fear or mistrust the hearts motives or capability in supporting the individual. Ironically such beliefs then keep the person in a state of disharmony. The extent to which a music therapist, or any therapist for that matter, is ruled by such beliefs renders her/him unable to effect a true state of internal harmony and optimal tuning in the patient. Such beliefs are often deeply conditioned in the therapist, held at an unconscious level and effectively convey a disharmony in the music that they produce in the therapeutic situation. By clearing these conditioned beliefs it is possible for the therapist to tune themselves to their own inner harmony thereby allowing them to improvise a form of pure musical harmony in the therapeutic setting that helps the patient optimally tune into their own internal harmony. The permanent clearing of such conditioning from ones bio-energetic field has recently become possible through a new tool called the Mind Resonance Process developed within the last several years. Nick Arrizza M.D. is an Energy Psychiatrist and Researcher who lives in Toronto, Canada. He is the developer of the Mind Resonance Process (MRP), Author of Esteem for the Self: A Manual for Personal Transformation (Found at http://www.telecoaching4u.com/ebook.htm), and a Speaker. By R.L. Morgan “Sleepover? For adults?” you may be asking. “What do you mean?” Two-person pajama party. Duo slumber party. Couple cuddle fest. Jammie jam. No-sex sleepover. It can happen early in the relationship. You’re not ready to have sex, so you only cuddle and snooze with your new sweetie all night. Sleepovers are living on the edge. There is potential danger. You have to trust the guy enough to know he won’t force you to do anything you don’t want to do. I’m not advocating them, however, I know they happen. I’ll share some guidelines if you decide it is right for you. When are sleepovers likely to happen? When you’ve been out on a date until late. Your date brings you home, but is exhausted and has a long drive ahead, or has had a tad too much to drink so is uncomfortable driving. Coffee would barely make a dent in his alertness. He’s been a gentleman in every encounter with you. You haven’t had to reel him in. He’s shown he is trustworthy through his actions and words. He’s honored your boundaries. One option is for him to sleep in the guest room or on the couch. But know that if there are sparks between you, one of you may join the other before morning. More often sleepovers are in the same bed. How tos: * Explain he can stay, but there will be no sex of any kind. Some people have Clintonian definitions of sex, so be clear you mean no sex. * Clothing is not optional. At minimum, undies must stay on, in their proper place (around one’s knees does not count as “on,” although technically they are on your body). Ideally, you both wear and keep on something non-sexy, e.g., t-shirts and sweat pants, pajamas tops and bottoms. Flannel or cotton, not silk or satin. The less exposed skin the better, so avoid camisoles. I’m not meaning to sound prudish, but you want to be uninviting in this situation. Don’t don your frilly, see-through negligee for a sleepover. Save it for later. It will only invite trouble. * Expect there will be some “exploration” — unless you have a bundling board. It is hard for two attracted people to keep their hands off each other. So verbalize your boundaries and if his hand “slips” reinforce what’s OK by moving it as well as restating your boundary. If this “slippage” happens more than a couple of times, kick him out. * You have to stick to your own rules. You can’t change midway and say, “You feel so good, let’s have sex.” You are then sending mixed messages and he won’t want to honor your limits in the future because he won’t think you’re serious about them. * Don’t be a temptress to test his mettle. It is hard enough for two people to lie together, so don’t let your hand “slip” to a sensitive zone, nor engage in passionate kissing or other provocative behaviors. You are putting him in a double bind and most mortals would not pass the test. Don’t do this. So with all these rules, why do it? And why wouldn’t you? The pros: * You confirm you can trust him to honor your wishes. If you can trust him in the face of temptation, it will deepen the relationship. * There is something delicious about sleeping intertwined with someone you care about. The cons: * You may not get a lot of sleep. Sleeping with someone new takes some getting used to. It’s easy to wake when he turns. He may snore. Sleeping with your head on his chest may sound romantic, but it can create neck pain. * He will be there in the morning, when you’ll have morning breath, possibly a hangover, and sans makeup. You may also have to share bathroom time before work, find him a toothbrush and razor, make him breakfast. Sleepovers are really a matter of trust. For a sleepover to be successful you have to have clearly defined boundaries and confidence in your and his ability to respect them. Be firm in your rules. Don’t waffle. When pajama parties work, they are a delicious way to deepen your relationship. R.L.
